A nice substitute is Adobe Photoshop Elements. It's a baby version of regular Photoshop, but it's waaaay cheaper and more user-friendly (in my opinion).
You can get Elements 6.0 (I have 5.0) for anywhere from $50 to about $90 on Amazon and eBay. There is a newer version, 7.0, but you can only use it if you have Vista and it's slightly more expensive.
Ha! I Photoshop almost everything I post. Not majorly, but I do a lot of tweaking!
